India — Student Visa Requirements for International Students

Offer / Admission Letter

  • You need an official admission letter (or provisional admission) from a recognized Indian university or institute.

  • For some medical courses, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Indian Ministry of Health may be required.

Passport

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity.

  • At least two blank visa pages.

Visa Application

  • Completed visa application form via the Indian visa portal.

  • Recent passport-sized photographs.

Proof of Financial Resources

  • Bank statements or sponsor’s financial documents to show you can cover tuition and living expenses.

  • If under 18, parental or guardian sponsorship letter may be required.

Academic Documents

  • Previous academic transcripts / certificates (for admission

  • Equivalence certificate, if your previous education isn’t recognized under Indian standards (for some institutions)

Medical Certificate

  • A medical fitness certificate may be required, depending on your nationality or the length of stay.

Character Certificate / Police Clearance

  • Some applications require a police clearance certificate to show you have no criminal record.

  • If you stay in India for more than 180 days, you must register with the FRRO / FRO (Foreigner Regional Registration Office) within 14 days of arrival.

Duration / Validity

  • The student visa can be issued for up to 5 years or the duration of the course, whichever is earlier.

  • After arrival, FRRO registration is mandatory for long-stay visa holders.

Health Insurance

  • While not always mandatory via visa, it is strongly advised that you have medical or health insurance for your stay.

Visa Fees

  • The visa fee varies depending on your country; check with your local Indian embassy or consulate for the current fee.
