China Student Visa Requirements for International Students

  1. Visa Type

    • X1 Visa: For programs longer than 180 days.

    • X2 Visa: For short-term study (less than or equal to 180 days

  2. Valid Passport

    • Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date.

    • At least 1–2 blank visa pages required

  3. Visa Application Form

    • Complete the Chinese visa application form (V.2013) or local visa-center form.

    • Provide one recent, passport-style photo.

  4. Admission Documentation

    • Letter of Acceptance / Admission Notice from your Chinese institution.

    • JW Form: Original (and copy) of JW201 (scholarship students) or JW202 (self-funded students), issued by your school or Chinese Ministry of Education.

  5. Medical Certificate

    • For X1 visa (long-term): Foreigner Physical Examination Report from an approved hospital.

    • Must be an authorized hospital’s medical examination form.

  6. Proof of Financial Support

    • Recent bank statements or financial documents (covering tuition, accommodation, and living expenses).

    • If sponsored: provide a sponsor letter and their financial proof (e.g. bank statements, employment letter).

    • Scholarship award letter (if applicable).

  7. Police / Character Clearance

    • Some embassies require a police clearance / criminal background certificate.

  8. Other Supporting Documents

    • Proof of accommodation (university dorm, private housing) is sometimes required.

    • For X2 visa: follow the specific X2 visa checklist and include required supporting documents.

    • Translations: Documents not in English or Chinese must be translated.

  9. Residence Permit (for X1 Visa)

    • After arriving in China, X1 visa holders must apply for a residence permit at the local Public Security Bureau within 30 days.

  10. Visa Application

    • Submit application in person at the Chinese embassy / consulate or via a Visa Application Service Center (CVASC).

    • Original documents + photocopies must be presented.

    • Processing time may vary (e.g., 4 working days for many consulates).
