South Korea — Student Visa (D-2) Requirements

  • Visa Type

    • The D-2 visa is for students enrolled in degree programs (associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral).

    • There are subcategories: D-2-1 (Associate), D-2-2 (Bachelor), D-2-3 (Master), D-2-4 (PhD), D-2-6 (Exchange), D-2-7 (Work-learning linked).

  • Required Documents
    Commonly required documents (these may vary slightly depending on the embassy and school):

    • Passport (valid) + copy of photo page.

    • Passport-sized photo (typically 3.5 × 4.5 cm, white background).

    • Certificate of Admission (CoA) from the Korean university.

    • Proof of education: transcript or certificate of highest completed education.

    • Proof of financial ability: bank statements, scholarship certificate, or sponsor affidavit.

    • TB (tuberculosis) test result: required for students from specific countries.

    • Visa application fee (varies, e.g. ~USD 60–90 for D-2 based on Korea University)

    • Business Registration Certificate of the school (some embassies require this)

  • Additional / Optional Documents

    • Police clearance or criminal record certificate (depends on country)

    • Health certificate or medical check-up (in some cases)

    • Proof of relationship / family (if family funds are used)

  • Visa Duration & Validity

    • The D-2 visa is typically issued for up to 2 years initially.

    • You can extend your visa / your Alien Registration Card (ARC) while in Korea, depending on your student status.

    • For graduate students, failure to register or take leave improperly can lead to visa termination.

  • After Arrival

    • Apply for an Alien Registration Card (ARC) within your first few weeks in Korea. Korea University requires this.

    • Register your residence / address with the immigration office.

    • Report to your university’s International Office / Global Services Center.

  • Working as a Student

    • With a D-2 visa, international students may apply for permission to do part-time work.

    • At some schools (like UNIST), working hours are limited (ex: up to 25 hours/week during semester for undergraduates).

    • You must apply for a work permit (off-campus) via HiKorea and get your university’s approval.
